About This Ghashghai

Where it comes from

This is a Qashqai, a hand-knotted nomadic weaving from the tribal confederations of Fars province in southern Iran, 308 x 211 cm (10'1" x 6'11"). The Qashqai are often called the most celebrated of Persia's tribal weavers, known for bold rosette medallions and a vivid, unmistakable palette. This piece takes that vocabulary and gives it an unusually disciplined line.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, and across it runs a diagonal chain of five medallions, each centred in ivory, stepping pole to pole from corner to corner. The middle medallion stands apart, framed in a paler cream that separates it from its four red-ground companions. Around this spine the red ground opens into dense navy corners, scattered with small floral botehs. A wide navy-black border, built from several guard stripes and packed with rosettes, closes the composition and holds the red field firmly in place.

How it was made

Qashqai weavers knot from memory, not a drawn plan, so a design like this travels through the hands rather than on paper. Setting five medallions in a straight diagonal line, rather than scattered as is usual, speaks of a deliberate hand at the loom. The wool is hand-spun before knotting, giving the surface its soft, uneven texture and the faint shadow along the pile edges. At around 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre and a 12 millimetre pile, the weave holds up to daily footfall yet stays soft underfoot.

At home

A rug of this size suits a living room, resting under a coffee table or anchoring a seating group. On a pale floor the brick red glows warm; against dark furniture it holds its ground without disappearing. The hand-spun wool is dense yet soft underfoot, made for daily use rather than careful protection, and the diagonal chain of medallions keeps catching the light as it moves through the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 308 × 211 cm (6.50 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 6.50 m² that is roughly 0.8 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
