About This Ghashghai

Where it comes from

This is a Qashqai tribal rug, also written Ghashghai, 305 x 219 cm (10'0" x 7'2"), from the nomadic confederation who move between the Fars highlands and the lowlands near Shiraz. Qashqai weaving is often called the best known of all Persian tribal work, prized for bold rosette medallions and a rich, memorable palette. This piece holds an unusual order within that usual profusion.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, scattered densely with small geometric motifs. Down the centre runs a clear chain of three small pole medallions, stepped diamonds in ivory-cream, one above the other. At each corner the red gives way to a dark navy, almost black ground, holding a large star-shaped rosette in cream and red that stands apart. A wide, multi-row border in matching navy and black carries a cream floral vine, taking roughly a sixth of the width.

How it was made

Both warp and pile are hand-spun wool, hand-knotted at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the mark of a weaver working from memory, not a drawn plan. Hand-spun yarn is slightly uneven, which gives the surface its matte, faintly ridged texture. At this density the pattern is drawn in clean geometric steps rather than fine curves, exactly how three medallions read as a sequence and the corners read as a field apart. The rug is twenty to forty years old, already settled into its life.

At home

This rug suits a living or dining room, laid under a seating group or a table. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the navy corners anchor it among darker furniture. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, a pile made for daily use, not one kept for best. As light moves across it, the cream rosettes catch first, the three medallions holding their line down the centre.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 305 × 219 cm (6.68 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 6.68 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
