About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch runner, also written Belouch, from the tribal weaving grounds of southeastern Iran, measuring 184 x 92 cm (6'0" x 3'0"). Baluch work is known for deep, earthy colour and bold angular geometry, knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan. Many pieces carry a single prayer niche; this one instead runs an unbroken lattice the full length of the runner, with no medallion to gather the eye.
What you see
The field is a deep brick-to-carmine red, filled corner to corner by a dense lattice of small stepped diamonds in dark chocolate-brown, each one holding a small rosette. There is no centre to the design; it simply repeats, diamond after diamond, down the length of the piece. A thin ivory guard stripe outlines the field just before the border begins, sharpening the edge of the lattice against it. The border itself runs in bands of red and dark brown, set with small ivory eight-point florets and hooked lozenges.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp, at a density of around 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and that slight irregularity is what keeps each diamond in the lattice looking drawn by hand rather than stamped from a template, even at so steady a rhythm. At 6 mm the pile stays low and close to the weave, so the geometry reads sharp rather than soft underfoot. Twenty to forty years old, it is a weave still well within its working life.

A runner of this size belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it is walked rather than only looked at, which suits a pattern built on rhythm rather than a single focal point. The deep red holds its own in a passage with little daylight, warming the space rather than needing light to work. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily footsteps rather than careful ones. When daylight does cross it, the ivory florets along the border are what catch it first.
