About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch rug — also written Belouch — a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 197 x 106 cm (6'6" x 3'6"). The type is known for bold, angular geometry knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan, and for a palette built on deep red and indigo. This particular piece takes that same tribal hand and gives it an unusually ordered result.

What you see

The first impression is a near-black field, its ground carrying a faint brown-violet cast rather than true black. Across it runs a tight grid of small hooked diamonds set out in twelve regular columns, each outlined in cream and filled with rust-red and brick-orange. The order holds edge to edge. Framing the field is a wide border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, banded in deep red with dark, stepped hook meanders and a fine ivory zigzag guard stripe.

How it was made

Knotted by hand on a cotton warp, the handspun wool sits at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, high for a rug worked on a portable loom. Hand-spinning leaves the wool slightly uneven in thickness, which is what gives the pile its warm, matt texture rather than a uniform sheen. Holding twelve columns of diamonds this regular without a drawn cartoon took a steady, practiced hand, and the pile is clipped short, to six millimetres, keeping the drawing crisp underfoot.

At home

This suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere seen up close. The near-black ground holds its own against dark wood and warms a hallway with little daylight, while the rust-red and ivory grid keeps the eye moving without ever turning busy. Underfoot it is dense, firm and closely clipped, made for a floor that is walked on rather than admired. In low light, the ivory outlines come forward first, ahead of the red.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 197 × 106 cm (2.09 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.09 m² that is roughly 270,000 to 330,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
