About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 165 x 90 cm (5'5" x 2'11"). Baluch rugs are known for bold, angular geometry and a single prayer-niche field worked in deep red and indigo. This piece takes a quieter route: instead of one mihrab, it sets out a disciplined grid of medallions.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, and across it march twelve octagonal medallions in dark navy-black, three columns of four, each centre picked out in rust or olive-green. Between every medallion sits a small ivory eight-pointed star, so a second, quieter rhythm runs beneath the first. The whole composition reads almost like tilework, orderly and repeating, before the wide border closes it in: a near-black band patterned with rust and cream stepped motifs, standing in firm contrast to the red field.

How it was made

Baluch rugs are knotted from memory on a portable loom, so a grid this precise is the mark of a steady hand rather than a machine. At 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, the weaver had enough knots to keep every octagon and every ivory star aligned across all twelve repeats. The wool is hand-spun, so the yarn varies slightly in thickness, leaving the pile with a matte, gently uneven density rather than a workshop's glassy evenness.

At home

This rug suits a hallway or landing, a place for walking rather than lingering. The deep brick red holds its warmth where daylight is scarce, and the dark border keeps it grounded underfoot. The wool pile is dense and firm, made to take foot traffic rather than avoid it. Morning light catches the small ivory stars first, a quiet rhythm you keep noticing long after the grid feels familiar.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 165 × 90 cm (1.48 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.48 m² that is roughly 190,000 to 240,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
