About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

A Lori rug from the Zagros mountains of Persia, 208 x 156 cm (6'10" x 5'1"). Lori weaving comes from the same nomadic tradition as the better-known Gabbeh, made by families for daily use rather than for display, and valued for bold, pared-back motifs set down in confident colour rather than fine detail.

What you see

The field is a warm honeyed gold, and across it runs a grid of mustard lines, dividing the ground into a quiet arrangement of rectangular panels. There is no medallion, no floral motif to interrupt it — only the grid itself, drawn rather than ruled, so the lines waver very slightly as they cross the field. A narrow pale beige border runs around the edge, barely lighter than the field, holding the design rather than framing it.

How it was made

Knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, on a portable loom, without a cartoon to guide the grid — that is why the lines are not quite straight, and why the irregularity reads as the record of a hand rather than a flaw. The wool is hand-spun and coloured with dye taken from mountain plants, which is what gives the pile its faintly heathered, flecked surface rather than a flat, uniform gold. The weave holds the grid crisply while keeping the 11 mm pile soft underfoot.

At home

A rug this size suits a smaller living room or a study, laid under a chair and side table rather than a full seating group, or beside a bed. The honey gold will warm a pale floor and hold its own against dark wood furniture, without competing with whatever else is in the room. Underfoot it is soft and forgiving rather than dense, better suited to a room of quiet use than to heavy daily traffic. As the light in the room moves through the day, the hand-drawn grid catches it a little differently each time, so the rug never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 208 × 156 cm (3.24 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.24 m² that is roughly 650,000 to 810,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
