About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh runner, 187 x 60 cm (6'2" x 2'0"), from the village weavers of southern Iran, a tradition known for confident geometry and a colour sense that answers to no one. Runners of this type usually settle into one repeating pattern down their length. This one does not, and that is worth knowing before you look closer.

What you see

An ivory field carries the eye first, calm ground for what follows. Down its length march six diamond medallions, and no two share a colour: rust-red, then teal, then navy-black, then teal again, red, then navy-brown, each set against the same pale ground like a separate stone on a chain. Stylised botteh and small floral sprays fill the spaces between them, in mustard, dusty pink and slate blue. A broad brick-red border closes the field, a serrated dark zigzag running just inside it, and a narrow ivory-and-navy stripe at the very edge.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun, and it shows: the surface carries a slight unevenness that catches the light differently from one medallion to the next, which is part of why the sequence reads as distinct jewels rather than a stamped repeat. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand onto a cotton warp, the density is enough to hold each diamond crisp without smoothing away that hand-spun texture. This is a young piece, woven within the last two decades, its colour and its wool both still close to the loom.

At home

A runner this size belongs in a hallway, or beside a bed, and here it earns the place twice over. The ivory ground lifts a corridor that gets little daylight, while the run of colour down its centre gives a passage people usually walk through without looking a reason to stop. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, twelve millimetres of pile that takes daily footsteps without complaint, made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Morning light picks out one medallion at a time as you pass, first the rust, then the teal, then the navy, so no two mornings show quite the same rug.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 187 × 60 cm (1.12 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 1.12 m² that is roughly 230,000 to 280,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
