About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh, a village weaving from the Fars region of Iran, and its reputation rests on confident geometry paired with a palette few other village rugs attempt. At 244 x 164 cm (8'0" x 5'5"), it is sized for a room rather than a passage, and what sets it apart even among Yalameh work is that no two of its medallions share a colour.

What you see

A deep coral red fills the field, divided into a grid of large diamond compartments, each holding its own smaller medallion. The centres cycle rather than repeat: navy, then cream, then green, then a dusty blue, then a dark plum, and on. Small floral sprays fill the red ground between the diamonds, softening the geometry without blurring it. A narrow ivory border, floral and quiet by comparison, closes the field, held firm by a dark indigo guard stripe that gives the red its edge.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted, its wool spun by hand onto a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre — close enough to hold that diamond outline crisp rather than soft. A 12 millimetre pile keeps the colour full-bodied rather than thin. The shifting sequence of medallion colours is the clearest sign of how this was made: a village weaver working from memory rather than a drawn cartoon, choosing the next compartment's colour as she reached it rather than repeating a fixed plan, so the rhythm across the field belongs to no one else.

At home

Put this in a living room, under a coffee table or in front of a sofa group where the whole lattice can be read at once. Against a pale floor the coral red will hold the room's warmth on its own; against dark furniture it will simply refuse to recede. The wool is dense and slightly grainy underfoot, made for a room that gets used rather than one kept for show. As the light moves through the day, it is the medallions that catch it first, one colour, then the next, never quite the same rug twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 244 × 164 cm (4.00 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 4.00 m² that is roughly 1.3 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
