About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh, also written Yalameh-ye Aliabad, a village weaving from southern Iran, long known for confident geometric patterns and an unusually vivid palette. The piece measures 299 x 207 cm (9'10" x 6'9"). Yalameh weavers work a repeating diamond lattice into something closer to a mosaic, each compartment reworked in its own colours rather than left to repeat.

What you see

The field opens in a warm coral red, filled edge to edge with a lattice of small diamonds. Look closer and no two compartments match: some are worked in navy, some in ivory, others in rust, olive, gold or a deep aubergine-black, each holding its own small motif. The effect is less a single repeating pattern than dozens of individual medallions set side by side. A wide navy border closes the field, its ivory diamond guard stripe holding the red and navy apart with authority.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted, with hand-spun wool pile on a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. That density gives the weaver room to change colour compartment by compartment without losing the crispness of each small motif — a coarser knot would blur the diamonds into a single blended field. At a pile height of 12 mm the surface stays dense and even, with the light sheen typical of hand-spun wool rather than a machine-carded yarn.

At home

At just under three metres by two, this rug suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The coral red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor unaided. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than careful stepping. In sun the small compartments catch differently, so the mosaic never quite reads the same way twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 299 × 207 cm (6.19 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 6.19 m² that is roughly 2.0 to 2.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
