Where it comes from
A Yalameh runner from the village weavings of Iran, 196 x 67 cm (6'5" x 2'2"), a tradition known for confident geometry and a colour palette that does not hold back. Yalameh work sits between tribal memory and village order, and this piece shows exactly that balance: a pattern drawn freehand, but with a discipline running through it that a purely nomadic piece would not always keep.
What you see
The ground is a deep brick red, and down its length runs a column of five serrated diamond medallions, the natural layout for a runner this narrow. What sets the sequence apart is that the medallions do not repeat identically: navy, then ivory, then steel-blue, then ivory, then navy again, so the eye reads a rhythm of light and dark rather than a single motif copied five times. Stylised floral sprays fill the ground between them. The border keeps the same restraint, a narrow ivory guard stripe, a red ground with small stepped zigzags, and a dark navy outer edge, together making up about a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a range typical of village work rather than city workshop production. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even in thickness, and that is exactly why the surface has the soft, slightly irregular texture it does, and why the medallion edges read as serrated rather than drawn with a ruler. At a 12 mm pile height the wool has real depth underfoot, and a density in this range lets a weaver work from memory at a good pace, which is how five medallions end up related rather than identical.
At home
A runner of this size belongs in a hallway, on a landing, or along one side of a bed, and the brick red holds its warmth in spaces that see little daylight. Underfoot the hand-spun wool is soft but substantial, dense enough for a passage that gets walked every day rather than admired from a doorway. Passing over it morning and evening, the sequence down its length keeps its rhythm, navy to ivory to steel-blue to ivory to navy, a small pleasure repeated every time you cross it.
