About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh runner, also written Yalameh-ye Aliabad, from the village weavers of Iran's south-west, 191 x 67 cm (6'3" x 2'2"). Yalameh weaving is known for confident geometric pattern and a colour sense that rarely repeats itself, and here that character shows in an unusual way: instead of one dominant field colour, the length of the runner is built from a run of narrow, alternating stripes.

What you see

The stripes run petrol green, ivory, grey-blue and dusty rose, each band carrying its own small geometric motifs, so the field reads less as a single pattern than as a sequence of colours moving along the runner. This is framed by a broad, deep maroon-red border, edged with a cream zigzag guard stripe. At each end the border widens into a pale blue panel filled with large, stylised hooked forms in salmon-pink and cream, outlined in black for a graphic edge against the striped field.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton warp, and hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even in thickness the way machine-spun wool is. That slight irregularity is exactly what gives the surface its flat, matte character and its lack of sheen. It also explains the stripes themselves: a village weaver working freehand, without a drawn plan, chooses her own width and colour for each band as she goes, which is why no two stripes here run quite true to the last.

At home

At 67 cm wide this is a hallway or landing piece, met at eye level before the room itself. Against a pale or dark floor the maroon border holds its own, while the striped field keeps things lively rather than heavy underfoot. Flat and dense, the hand-spun wool wears well under regular footsteps, and walking its length is like passing a small sequence of paintings, one stripe at a time.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 191 × 67 cm (1.28 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
