About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh, a village weaving from the Fars region of southern Iran, sometimes called Shekarlu, measuring 281 x 215 cm (9'3" x 7'1"). The type is prized for bold, confident geometry and a bright, earthy palette, its diamonds and medallions drawn freehand by the weaver rather than copied from a fixed plan. On this piece that freedom shows itself as something more ordered than usual, a run of medallions built on purpose rather than scattered across the field.

What you see

A dense brick-red ground fills the field first, patterned all over with a fine Mahi lattice of fish and rosettes. Crossing it on the diagonal is a chain of five diamond medallions, and rather than repeating in one colour they step through a sequence: light blue at each outer end, dark navy just inside, and a single ivory medallion holding the centre. Triangular spandrels in the corners pick up the same blue in their own smaller lattice. Around all of it runs an indigo-blue border, moderately narrow, filled with small rosettes in red, cream and green, and closed off by slim red and cream guard stripes.

How it was made

The pile is handspun wool, knotted onto a cotton foundation at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density that gives a village weaving like this real substance without chasing the extreme fineness of a city workshop. Handspun yarn is never perfectly even in thickness, and that small variation is what let the weaver take liberties with the medallion chain, easing it away from a strict repeat into the graduated run of colour you see, ivory at the heart and blue at the ends. At 12mm the pile sits moderately short, giving a slightly velvety, matt surface rather than a deep or glossy one.

At home

At 281 x 215 cm this rug is sized for a dining table or a seating group in a living or dining room, somewhere it can be seen in full. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor without shouting. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a weave built to take daily use rather than sit protected, and as light moves across the room through the day it catches the ivory and blue of the medallion chain in turn, so the diagonal run along the field never quite looks the same twice.
