About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

A Yalameh rug, also known as Shekarlu, from the village weavers of southern Iran, 302 x 200 cm (9'11" x 6'7"), a type known for its confident geometry and unapologetically bright colour. Where most Yalameh rugs repeat a single palette across their diamond lattice, this one is built from dozens of individually coloured medallions, each compartment a small decision of its own.

What you see

The first impression is a deep navy ground, dense and dark enough to hold everything else in place. Across it runs an all-over lattice of small diamonds, each one framed and filled in its own combination of brick red, coral, powder blue, ivory or mustard, so the field reads less as a repeating pattern than as a mosaic. A broad ivory border closes the composition, carrying a red-and-navy zigzag that answers the field's colour without competing with it.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton warp, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, tight enough to hold each small diamond's outline crisply. The wool is hand-spun, taking colour with a faint unevenness that no two skeins repeat, which is very likely why no two medallions here share quite the same shade. A 12 millimetre pile keeps the surface even, with a slight sheen across the lighter tones.

At home

This suits a living room or dining room, under a table or anchoring a seating group. The navy ground holds its own against dark wood, while brick red and coral keep a pale floor from feeling cold. Underfoot the pile is dense, short and firm, made for daily use. Through the day its sheen shifts from one medallion to the next, so the rug never settles into a single mood.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 302 × 200 cm (6.04 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 6.04 m² that is roughly 1.9 to 2.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
