About This Yalameh

Where it comes from

This is a Yalameh runner, also known as Shekarlu, 192 x 81 cm (6'3" x 2'8"), from the village weaving tradition of Iran. Yalameh work is known for confident geometric design and a lively, distinctive palette, each rug carrying the particular imagination of the weaver rather than a fixed workshop plan.

What you see

A deep navy field runs the length of the piece, carrying a strict row of five stepped diamond medallions. Each is filled with smaller nested diamonds and florals, and each takes its own colour scheme in turn - blue, red, ivory, red, blue - so the chain reads as a considered sequence rather than a plain repeat. The middle medallion breaks the pattern outright, set on a ground of cream where its neighbours sit on navy. Trees and rosettes scatter through the field between them, and a wide ivory border, filled with a serrated vine and flanked by red and navy guard stripes, closes the design along both edges.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre - a village rate rather than a fine city one, and exactly enough to hold the stepped edges of each diamond crisp and clear without smoothing them into a softer, rounder line. Hand-spun yarn varies slightly in thickness along its length, and that is why the diamond outlines carry a faint ribbed texture and the surface takes light unevenly, in a matte glow rather than a uniform sheen.

At home

At this size the rug belongs in a hallway or on a landing, somewhere it is seen end to end rather than sat around. The navy holds its own where daylight is scarce, and the brick red and cream diamonds keep the length from reading as one dark strip. Underfoot the 12mm wool pile is soft yet firm, made for a floor that gets crossed every day. As the light along the hall shifts through the day, the cream-ground medallion at the centre is the one that keeps catching the eye first.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 192 × 81 cm (1.56 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 1.56 m² that is roughly 310,000 to 390,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
