About This Dorokhsh
Where it comes from
This is a Dorokhsh, from the Khorasan weaving villages of eastern Iran near Moud, also written Mud, with which it shares a tradition. 342 x 242 cm (11'3" x 7'11"). The type is known for an elegant, polished drawing and a subtle surface sheen that moves as the light crosses it.
What you see
The first impression is calm: a pale ivory field carrying a fine, all-over Mahi lattice that reads more as texture than pattern. At its centre sits a scalloped navy medallion with matching pendants, and the same navy and shape recur in the four corners, giving the layout a strong mirrored symmetry. A wide brick-red border of floral vine scrollwork frames the field, held by narrow guard stripes in powder blue and cream, with touches of dusty pink, sage green and pale gold in the vine.
How it was made
This density of drawing comes from a knot count of 321,000 to 380,000 per square metre, tied onto a cotton warp over several months. The pile is wool blended with silk; silk spins finer than wool, so the weaver can tie a tighter knot in the same space, and it is this that keeps the Mahi lattice crisp rather than blurred. Shorn to 12 millimetres, the pile sits close to the foundation, sharpening every line, and the piece carries the weaver's signature in the border.

This rug suits a dining table or a living-room seating group, its size enough to hold the room. The ivory field lifts a pale floor and settles quietly against dark furniture, while the brick-red border keeps its colour under a laid table. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool and silk standing up to daily use, and in afternoon light the medallion holds a quiet sheen that moves as you cross the room.
