About This Dorokhsh

Where it comes from

A hand-knotted Dorokhsh rug, 105 x 109 cm (3'5" x 3'7"), from the Khorasan weaving villages of south Khorasan in eastern Iran, close neighbour to the better-known Moud. The type is prized for an elegant, refined drawing built around the Mahi, or Herati, motif, and for a subtle surface sheen that moves as the light does. This piece is nearly square, and its ground is ivory rather than the deeper red or navy more usual for the design.

What you see

The first impression is of pale, open space: a fine diamond lattice fills the field edge to edge, with no medallion to gather the eye toward a centre. Within each diamond sits a small palmette, touched with rust-orange, dusty rose, steel-blue and soft green, so the pattern keeps the eye travelling rather than settling. A wide border in deep burgundy-red, dressed with a floral vine, closes the field, held on either side by narrow navy guard stripes set with small rosettes. Against the ivory ground, that border carries real weight.

How it was made

The pile is wool with silk, and silk is a far finer fibre than wool, which allows the weaver to tie a smaller, tighter knot and draw a sharper line. At a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre, that fineness runs through the whole lattice, keeping every diamond and palmette crisp rather than letting it blur into its neighbour. A cotton warp gives the structure its firmness, the pile is kept low at 12 millimetres for a clean, even surface, and the piece carries the weaver's signature, knotted in rather than added afterwards.

At home

At just over a metre square, this is a rug for a hallway console, a study, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere a small footprint has to do real work. The ivory ground lifts a dark corner or a room with little daylight, while the red border holds its own against dark wood furniture close by. Underfoot it is low, dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for looking at from a distance. Catch it in evening light and the silk in the pile lifts, the whole lattice seeming to come forward off the ground.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 105 × 109 cm (1.14 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 1.14 m² that is roughly 370,000 to 430,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
