About This Ilam

Where it comes from

This is an Ilam, also written Ilām, a village weaving from the Kurdish districts of Ilam province in western Iran, measuring 209 x 136 cm (6'10" x 4'5"). The type is prized for a longer, denser pile and bold, plainly stated motifs, woven for a cold mountain climate and for daily wear rather than display. What sets this piece apart is how precisely that tradition has been drawn.

What you see

A deep brick red covers the field, broken only by a central medallion in navy and ivory, its pendants reaching up and down the length of the rug. Dense floral sprays in camel, dusty rose and teal fill the ground around it, while the four corners are left in plain ivory, quieter than the field they interrupt. A wide navy border, patterned with the same florals, runs around the whole piece, held on either side by a narrow ivory guard stripe.

How it was made

The pile is wool knotted onto a silk warp, and that foundation is what lets the drawing stay this sharp. Silk spins far finer than wool, so the weaver can tie a tighter knot and hold a curved line cleanly. The density here runs to 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, high for a village weaving, and the piece is signed by Sherkat Farsh, a named workshop rather than an anonymous hand — months of close work, knot by knot.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a reading corner, sitting under a chair and side table or at the foot of a bed. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the ivory corners keep the design from feeling crowded. Underfoot it is short and firm, dense enough for daily use, and the colours shift gently as light crosses the room.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 209 × 136 cm (2.84 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.84 m² that is roughly 2.3 to 2.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
