About This Ilam
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Ilam, also written Ilām, a regional Persian weaving from the Kurdish districts of western Iran, measuring 194 x 134 cm (6'4" x 4'5"). The type is prized less for drawing-room precision than for its dense, long pile and bold, earthy character, the work of village weavers in a cold mountain region who knot for warmth and durability rather than formal refinement.
What you see
The first impression is a deep brick red field, richly saturated, from which a large lobed medallion in navy rises at the centre. Its core is a cream-and-blue rosette, cut sharply against the surrounding navy, with pendants reaching toward the corners. Navy spandrels fill the corners in matching tone, and around the whole a wide floral border in navy repeats the red-and-cream palette, framed on each side by a narrow mustard-gold guard stripe.
How it was made
Village Ilam rugs are usually knotted on a cotton foundation; this one carries a silk warp instead, which lets the knots sit closer together and keeps the medallion's outline crisp rather than soft. Density runs to 800,000-1,000,000 knots per square metre, months of steady work at the loom, and the pile is wool strengthened with silk, giving the rosette core its faint sheen. Woven under the Sherkat Farsh workshop and signed, it carries more precision than the type usually offers.
