About This Ilam

Where it comes from

This is a medallion carpet from Ilam, also written Ilām, in the Kurdish west of Iran, 213 x 135 cm (7'0" x 4'5"). Ilam weaving is a village tradition, prized for bold geometric motifs and a dense, hardwearing pile rather than fine, formal drawing. This piece takes the same wool and the same hands into something far more classical.

What you see

The field is a soft ivory, open enough that the floral scrollwork covering it reads clearly rather than crowding. At the centre sits a diamond medallion in red and navy, its dark core echoed in the four navy corner spandrels, giving the whole composition a quiet, mirrored balance. Palmettes and vine scrolls in green, gold, pink, blue and rust drift across the ground between them, closed in by a wide red border of the same floral vine and several narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

The warp is silk rather than cotton, which spins finer and lets the weaver tie a smaller, tighter knot than a village Ilam usually carries; the count here runs to between 800,000 and 1,000,000 knots per square metre, close to workshop density. That fineness is what lets the scrollwork be drawn so precisely rather than blocked out geometrically, and at 6 millimetres the wool-and-silk pile stays low enough to hold it. The rug carries the signature of Sherkat Farsh, a workshop whose name collectors recognise.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom, laid beside or under the bed rather than lost in a larger room. The ivory ground lifts a room with little daylight, while red and navy hold their own against darker furniture. Underfoot it is dense yet fine, soft rather than deep, suited to a calm room rather than heavy traffic. Morning light moves across the wool's soft sheen and shifts the colours through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 213 × 135 cm (2.88 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.88 m² that is roughly 2.3 to 2.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
