About This Ilam
Where it comes from
This is an Ilam rug, a regional Kurdish weaving from the mountainous west of Iran, here in a size of 207 x 138 cm (6'9" x 4'6"). Rugs of this origin are usually valued for a longer, denser pile and bold, earthy patterns, prized more for warmth of character than precision of line. This particular piece runs against that expectation, drawn with a clarity closer to a city workshop than a mountain village.
What you see
A vivid brick red fills the field, and against it sits a navy-and-cream lozenge medallion, sharp-edged, with pendants running along the vertical axis. The four corner spandrels are cream rather than navy, which lightens the corners and keeps the composition open rather than closing it in. Between medallion and border, a fine floral tracery carries touches of gold, rust and rose. The wide navy border gathers all of this in, edged by slender guard stripes in blue, cream and rust that hold the red field firmly in check.
How it was made
The pile is knotted at 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, a density that puts this piece among the finer examples of its type and represents months of steady work at the loom. Beneath it runs a silk warp rather than the usual cotton or wool: silk spins far thinner, so the weaver could set knots closer together and cut the medallion's edges as cleanly as they appear here, without the softening a coarser foundation would force on the drawing. Sherkat Farsh, the workshop named in the signature, is the reason that discipline holds across the whole field and not just at the centre.

The red brings real warmth to a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture, while the navy border keeps the whole from ever tipping into loud.
