About This Ilam

Where it comes from

This is an Ilam, also written Ilām, a hand-knotted rug from the western Iranian province of the same name, 210 x 136 cm (6'11" x 4'6"). The region is usually known for a dense, long pile and bold tribal geometry rather than formal drawing, yet this piece sets a classic medallion composition with a precision closer to a city workshop's cartoon.

What you see

A dense field of brick red carries a lobed navy medallion with pendants, floating clear against small florals in sage green, dusty pink, mustard gold and steel blue. At each corner the field breaks into ivory spandrels, a deliberate change of ground that sharpens the composition rather than softening it. A wide navy border, patterned with the same floral drawing, closes the rug, held by narrow cream and pale blue guard stripes.

How it was made

The rug is knotted on a silk warp, which spins thinner than wool and allows a far finer knot; density here reaches 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, giving the florals their clean, unblurred outlines rather than the softer blur usual in Kurdish weaving. The pile blends wool with silk and stays low, at six millimetres, keeping the drawing sharp rather than deep. It carries the signature of Sherkat Farsh, a named workshop rather than an anonymous village hand.

At home

At 210 x 136 cm this suits a bedroom or a quiet corner of a sitting room. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture, while the ivory corners keep the design light rather than heavy. The pile is dense and firm underfoot, wool bred for a mountain climate, made to be walked on rather than admired from the doorway. Morning light finds the mustard and dusty pink in the florals, colours that stay quiet until the sun reaches them.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 210 × 136 cm (2.86 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.86 m² that is roughly 2.3 to 2.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
