About This Ilam

Where it comes from

This is an Ilam, also written Ilām, a rug from the Kurdish weaving villages of Ilam province in western Iran, at 207 x 134 cm (6'9" x 4'5"). The type is known for a long, dense pile and bold tribal geometry, valued for durability and an earthy, forthright character. Here the weaver has instead drawn a formal medallion composition, with a precision the type rarely attempts.

What you see

The field is a deep navy, packed densely with fine, even floral scrollwork. At its centre sits a layered medallion: an ivory diamond core held within a wider red diamond, its spandrels echoing the same red at each corner. A broad brick-red border of floral scrollwork frames the field, edged in cream and camel-gold guard stripes. Small notes of sage green, dusty pink and slate blue run through the scrollwork, softening the contrast between red and navy.

How it was made

The rug is knotted on a silk warp, with a wool pile carrying a fine silk highlight through the medallion. Silk spins thinner than wool, letting the weaver tie far more knots into the same area; density here runs to 800,000-1,000,000 knots per square metre, well above what is typical for the type. That density keeps the scrollwork even and fine across the whole field, rather than the looser drawing the region is known for. It is signed by Sherkat Farsh, a workshop known for disciplined village weaving.

At home

This rug suits a seating area in a living room, in front of a sofa or between two chairs. The navy field holds its own against dark wood, while the red medallion warms a pale floor. The pile is short, dense and slightly crisp underfoot, made for daily use. As daylight crosses the room, fine silk threads in the medallion catch the light and shift through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 207 × 134 cm (2.77 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.77 m² that is roughly 2.2 to 2.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
