About This Ilam

Where it comes from

This is an Ilam, also written Ilām, a Kurdish village weaving from the western Iranian province of the same name, here 199 x 134 cm (6'6" x 4'5"). Ilam rugs are known for a longer, denser pile and bold tribal motifs, valued more for earthy warmth and durability than for formal precision. This particular piece departs from that expectation.

What you see

The eye meets a deep navy field, calm and unbroken but for a large star-shaped medallion rendered in brick red and ivory, its outline drawn with unusual sharpness. Slender pendants extend from the medallion along the field's axis, set among fine floral scrollwork carrying touches of dusty blue, sage green and salmon. Ivory spandrels mark the corners, holding the same crisp line as the medallion, before a wide brick-red floral border closes the design, framed on either side by narrow ochre guard stripes.

How it was made

That clarity is no accident. Knotted on a fine silk warp rather than the coarser wool used elsewhere, the weaver could tie between 800,000 and 1,000,000 knots per square metre, dense enough for a curved line to hold its shape. The pile, wool with silk, stays at six millimetres, keeping that fine drawing intact rather than softening it. The piece carries the signature of Sherkat Farsh, a named workshop, and the even execution across the field bears it out.

At home

At 199 x 134 cm, this rug suits a bedroom, laid where a chair or the foot of the bed meets the floor. The navy settles a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, the ivory medallion keeping the room open even in low light. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built to take daily use. What stays with you is that medallion, crisp against the navy whatever the light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 199 × 134 cm (2.67 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.67 m² that is roughly 2.1 to 2.7 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
