About This Ilam

Where it comes from

Ilam rugs come from the Kurdish villages of Ilam province in western Iran, a cold, mountainous region whose weavers are known for dense, long pile and bold, plainly stated patterns rather than fine formal drawing. This one measures 213 x 133 cm (7'0" x 4'4"). Where Ilam work usually reads as earthy and robust, this piece has been drawn with an unexpected fineness, on a cool steel-blue ground rather than the customary red or ivory.

What you see

The field is a dense, all-over floral vine, closely and evenly spaced, its colour a taubenblau that sits somewhere between dove and steel. A small multi-petalled rosette marks the centre, so gently that it barely separates itself from the surrounding repeat, and pale corner palmettes echo it outward. Around this runs a wide brick-red border, filled with alternating floral cartouches and rosettes, framed by narrow ivory guard stripes. Against the cool field the red border holds its ground firmly, giving the whole piece a settled, well-balanced edge.

How it was made

The warp is silk rather than the cotton more usual to this region, and a silk warp takes a tighter, finer knot than cotton allows, which is how a village weaving normally built for bold, simple statements comes to carry such closely drawn floral detail. At 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, this rug holds somewhere near two and a half million knots across its surface, the work of many months at the loom. The pile itself is wool blended with silk, kept low at 6 mm, giving a smooth, slightly lustrous surface with crisp, legible motifs. It is signed by the workshop Sherkat Farsh, whose name stands behind the piece.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner rather than a large open floor, and its steel-blue ground works well against pale flooring or light wood, cooling a warm room without turning cold itself, while the brick-red border keeps it anchored against darker furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for regular use rather than careful preservation. With its slight natural sheen, the surface shifts gently as daylight moves across it through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 213 × 133 cm (2.83 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.83 m² that is roughly 2.3 to 2.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
