About This Koliayie
Where it comes from
This is a Koliai rug, also written Koliayie, a tribal weaving from the Kurdish Songhor district of western Iran, within the wider Kermanshah weaving zone. At 276 x 149 cm (9'1" x 4'11"), it belongs to a tradition knotted from memory on portable looms, known for firm, high-piled wool and a saturated, energetic palette. Here that energy reads as bold contrast rather than an all-over pattern.
What you see
The first impression is a deep brick-red hexagonal medallion set hard against near-black navy corners, contrast rather than pattern. Within the medallion, a stepped diamond lattice fills the elongated hexagon, edged in cream and ivory. The navy spandrels carry small stylised forms that read as vases and birds, worked in olive green, dusty rose and touches of steel blue and black. A rose-red floral vine border of moderate width runs the full perimeter, held between narrow dark guard stripes set with small geometric devices.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted in hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, at 201,000-250,000 knots per square metre — close work for a tribal piece, and months at the loom. That wool carries its own lanolin from mountain grazing, giving the red ground a quiet sheen and the tonal shift visible knot to knot. Because the pattern was carried in memory rather than drawn on a cartoon, the medallion sits with a confidence no ruler gave it — which is why the contrast feels bold, not mechanical.
At home
Set in a hallway or entrance, this rug meets a visitor first: the brick red warms pale flooring, while the navy corners hold their own against dark furniture. Underfoot it is dense and firm, sturdy enough for a well-used passage rather than a room kept for best. As daylight crosses it, the tonal variation in the red wool shifts, and the medallion never quite looks the same twice.
