About This Koliayie
Where it comes from
This is a Koliai, also written Koliayie, a tribal rug knotted by Kurdish weavers who once herded through the Songhor district of western Iran, part of the wider Kermanshah weaving country. Koliai rugs are usually known for a bold, energetic palette and a large central medallion; this piece measures 243 x 153 cm (8'0" x 5'0") and takes a quieter route to that same energy.
What you see
The first impression is depth: a navy field so dark it reads almost blue-black, calm rather than loud for a weaving of this kind. Across it run vertical columns of botteh, the paisley-like plant form repeated in cream, sage green, salmon and ochre, each panel distinct from its neighbour rather than mirrored. There is no medallion here; the field reads as a garden of narrow beds rather than a single emblem. Around it all runs a broad brick-red border, carrying a procession of stylised deer, cream against red, unmistakably in motion.
How it was made
The weaver worked from memory rather than from a drawn plan, which is why the botteh columns vary slightly from one to the next - the record of a hand, not a cartoon. The wool is handspun, grazed on mountain pasture and rich in lanolin, which is what gives the pile its quiet sheen and its resistance to wear over the twenty to forty years this piece has already carried. Knotted at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, with the pile left at a generous 12mm, it holds a firm, dense surface despite that height.
At home
At 243 x 153 cm this is a rug for a seating area in a living room, or the foot of a bed, large enough to anchor a sofa and a pair of chairs without needing a hallway's length. The navy field holds its own against dark wood or leather, and takes on real warmth under lamplight in the evening, when the brick-red border comes forward and the ochre and salmon in the botteh start to glow. Underfoot it is dense and firm, the handspun wool compact enough to take daily use without flattening. Live with it a while and the procession of deer around the border is the detail you keep returning to, walking steadily around the room in the changing light.
