About This Isfahan
Where it comes from
A classical Isfahan, from the city workshops of central Iran, measuring 224 x 151 cm (7'4" x 4'11"). Isfahan weavers have long been credited with the finest drawing in Persian carpet making, their gardens and arabesques usually rendered in the deep jewel colours the city is famous for. This piece takes that same precision and turns the volume down: the field is a warm, quiet camel, and the ornament normally kept dense and glowing is here allowed to breathe.
What you see
The eye meets that camel ground first, scattered all over with small floral diamonds in navy and black, each centre touched with terracotta, sage, dusty pink or slate blue. Because the field colour stays so even, the motifs read less as individual flowers than as a fine, continuous texture across the whole surface. Only at the edge does the design raise its voice: a broad navy-black border, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width, filled edge to edge with cream and multicoloured scrollwork. The contrast between the calm centre and this richly drawn frame is what gives the rug its character.
How it was made
That contrast was only possible at this level of detail because of how it is built. The pile is wool with silk highlights, knotted over a silk warp, and silk spins far finer than wool, letting the weavers pack in 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre. At that density the small diamonds and the scrolling border vine can be drawn with real precision rather than blurring into one another, and a piece this fine represents many months at the loom. A woven signature in one corner marks it as the work of a named weaver rather than an anonymous workshop run, and the pile, kept short at 8 mm, gives the surface its soft, faintly lustrous sheen.
At home
A rug of this size suits a seating group in a living room, or the floor beside a bed, more readily than a full dining table. The camel field will warm a pale wood or stone floor and hold its own quietly against dark furniture, never competing with either. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than one that is kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the slight sheen in the wool catches the small florals in turn, so the surface never looks quite the same twice.
