About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

This hand-knotted Isfahan is the classical city-workshop rug of central Iran, here 218 x 140 cm (7'2" x 4'7"). The type is known for fine floral drawing and near-mathematical precision, refined in the royal workshops of seventeenth-century Isfahan and still followed today. Most examples rest on an ivory ground; this one is set on deep navy, giving it an unusually saturated, jewel-toned presence.

What you see

The field opens in a rich navy, filled with scrolling floral vines that keep the ground alive rather than plain. At its centre sits a large cusped medallion in warm camel and tan, edged in coral pink, dusty rose, sage green and mustard gold, and it holds the eye against the dark field. A wide powder-blue border, dense with floral sprays, frames the whole, held on either side by a narrow ivory guard stripe. Along the left edge of the field runs a woven signature cartouche.

How it was made

That precision comes from how the piece is built. The warp is silk, spun far finer than wool, so the weaver ties a smaller, tighter knot than a cotton foundation allows, letting the curling vine stems and the medallion's cusped outline take shape. Silk runs through the pile too, giving the medallion and floral sprays their light sheen against the flatter, matte ground. At 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, this is slow work, tied by the Mansouri workshop and signed along the field's edge.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom or a study, laid where it is seen whole — beside a bed, under a reading chair. The navy holds its own against dark wood or pale floors, and the camel medallion keeps the room warm. Underfoot the pile is fine and dense, suited to quiet daily use. In low light, the sheen across the medallion is what you keep noticing.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 218 × 140 cm (3.05 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 3.05 m² that is roughly 2.4 to 3.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
