About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

A classic Persian medallion carpet from Isfahan, in Iran's former Safavid capital, a city whose workshops have spent four centuries perfecting the floral cartoon: curling vines, jewel colours and a clarity of line that no other Persian city quite matches. This piece measures 227 x 145 cm (7'5" x 4'9"), a size suited to a defined room rather than an open hall.

What you see

A deep navy field carries the eye straight to a cream-and-red medallion at its centre, floating over a dense lattice of scrolling floral vines in dusty blue, sage and camel. Matching red spandrels anchor the corners, and a wide brick-red border of the same floral vine runs around the whole field, held in place by narrow cream and navy guard stripes. Against the navy ground, every curve of the medallion and every stem of the vine reads with unusual sharpness, nothing softened or lost in the weave.

How it was made

That sharpness is not an accident of colour alone. The rug is knotted on a silk warp, which spins far finer than cotton and lets the weaver tie a much tighter knot in the same space, here between 501,000 and 640,000 to the square metre. At that density a workshop weaver can follow the cartoon's finest curves almost stroke for stroke, which is why the vine tracery keeps its shape instead of blurring into the field. The pile itself is wool with silk detailing, kept low at 8 mm, giving the cream and camel motifs the light lustre you notice as you move past. Along the field a small knotted signature marks it as a finished, attributed piece, months of work by a named hand.

At home

In a study or a small formal dining room, this is a rug that holds its own against dark wood and quietly warms a pale floor at the same time, the navy grounding the space while the red medallion keeps the eye. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that is used rather than merely furnished. As daylight crosses it through the afternoon, the silk highlights in the cream tracery catch and shift, and the medallion never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 227 × 145 cm (3.29 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 3.29 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
