About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

This is an Isfahan, also written Esfahan, the classical city-workshop rug of central Iran, measuring 222 x 149 cm (7'3" x 4'11"). Isfahan weavers work from a drawn cartoon, and the type is known above all for finely drawn floral gardens and curving arabesques, a tradition set down in the royal workshops of the seventeenth century. This piece keeps that fine drawing, but sets it out quietly.

What you see

The first impression is warmth: a soft camel field, tone on tone, crossed by a fine diagonal lattice. Across that lattice sit small floral bouquets, botteh-like sprigs repeated evenly rather than gathered into one medallion. Each spray carries its own colour: a dark centre in navy or black, touches of brick red and burgundy, teal and dusty blue, olive leaves, small salmon-pink florets. Around this quiet field runs a border far wider than the field alone would ask for, ivory and beige, its own navy cartouches closing on a red-and-ivory zigzag guard.

How it was made

An Isfahan is knotted on a silk warp, which spins finer than cotton and lets the weaver tie a smaller knot without losing definition. Here the density runs to 641,000-800,000 knots per square metre, work close enough to hold the small sprigs true even at this scale. The pile is wool with a silk content, giving the surface its light sheen, kept low at six millimetres so the drawing stays crisp rather than deep. A woven signature in the lower right corner names the workshop's hand.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, warming a pale floor while holding its own against darker furniture. Underfoot the wool-and-silk pile is dense yet soft, new enough for daily use. As daylight crosses the room, the silk catches first along the border, and the small bouquets seem to shift quietly across the beige.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 222 × 149 cm (3.31 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre; across 3.31 m² that is roughly 2.1 to 2.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
