About This Isfahan
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Isfahan from central Iran, 212 x 136 cm (6'11" x 4'6"), a size suited to a room rather than a hall. Isfahan weavers have worked from drawn cartoons since the seventeenth-century court workshops of Shah Abbas, and the type is generally known for symmetrical garden designs built around a central medallion. This piece breaks from that expectation before you have even taken in the colours.
What you see
The field is a deep navy so dark it reads almost as black, and across it runs a dense planting of small flowering trees with birds moving among the branches, repeated edge to edge with no medallion to gather the eye. It has the effect of a garden seen at dusk rather than a formal court drawing. A wide sage-green border of flowering vine, its blossoms pink and cream, holds the dark field in check, and narrower cream and dark-plum diamond-lattice guard stripes tighten the frame further. Near the fringe at one end sits a small woven cartouche, the signature of the workshop that made it.
How it was made
That signature belongs to Emadi, and the density of the weave explains why the garden can be this crowded without losing clarity: at 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre, the loom carries enough resolution to draw each tree and each bird as its own small composition rather than repeat a single unit. A silk warp helped make that possible, since silk can be spun far finer than cotton and takes a tighter knot without adding bulk. The pile itself is wool lifted with silk, kept low at six millimetres, which is why the pinks and creams of the border catch a soft sheen while the near-black field stays flat and absorbs light around them.

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet study rather than an open living space, laid where it will be seen up close - beside a bed, under a window seat, in front of a desk. The near-black ground holds its own against dark wood and pale floors alike, and the sage and rose of the border keep the whole piece from ever feeling heavy. The pile is fine and dense underfoot, pleasant for bare feet in a room that sees quiet use rather than daily traffic. In low evening light the birds and blossoms seem to surface slowly out of the dark field, one at a time.
