About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

This is an Isfahan, the city rugs of Persia's former Safavid capital, measuring 214 x 141 cm (7'0" x 4'8"). The tradition is known for fine floral drawing worked from a master cartoon and for wool spun fine enough to carry silk detail without losing sharpness. Where Isfahan usually reads as a medallion set among arabesques in deep jewel tones, this one carries a different subject: a full pictorial tree of life.

What you see

The field opens in a pale seladon-beige, closer to the colour of new stone than to the tones the type usually favours. Across it stands a tree of life in brown branches, its limbs carrying rose blossoms in pink and red among olive-green leaves, and among the branches sit birds and small animals in the settled poses of Persian miniature painting. A wide navy-blue border closes the design, itself carrying roses and birds, and against the pale field its colour reads almost black.

How it was made

The warp is silk, the pile wool worked with silk highlights, and silk spins far finer than wool, which lets the knot itself go tighter. At 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre and a pile of only 6 millimetres, the weave holds enough resolution to draw single feathers and petals rather than suggest them, which is exactly what a crowded pictorial field like this one asks for. A woven cartouche, lower left of the field, signs the workshop's own name to the piece.

At home

At just over two metres by not much more than one, this suits a seating corner or a bedroom rather than a large room, somewhere it can be read up close. The pale field lifts a room furnished in darker tones, while the navy border holds its own against them, grounding the beige without crowding the roses inside it. Underfoot the weave is dense and firm, made to be walked on rather than kept for best. As the light moves through the day, the silk in the petals catches it differently, and the birds seem to shift position on their branches.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 214 × 141 cm (3.02 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 3.02 m² that is roughly 2.4 to 3.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
