Where it comes from
This is an Isfahan, from the city workshops of central Iran, measuring 200 x 127 cm (6'7" x 4'2"). Isfahan is the Persian city-workshop tradition at its most exacting: rugs drawn from a master's cartoon, worked to a fixed plan, prized for fine floral drawing and a clarity of line rare in carpet weaving. This piece carries a woven signature cartouche near the fringe, naming the workshop behind it.
What you see
A deep navy field carries the eye first, and against it the floral scrollwork reads with unusual precision, each vine and blossom drawn in salmon-pink, rust, sage and dusty blue rather than blurring into the dark ground. At the centre sits a lobed medallion, its ring picked out in cream, holding the scrollwork in place the way a drawn plan holds a pattern together. A wide ivory border frames the whole field, floral and calm, with a narrow steel-blue guard stripe running just inside it. The contrast between that pale border and the navy field is strong enough to read clearly from across a room, which is rare for a design this densely worked.
How it was made
That clarity comes from the construction. The warp is silk, which spins far finer than cotton and lets the weaver tie a smaller, tighter knot without the field becoming stiff or coarse — here the density runs to 800,000–1,000,000 knots per square metre, among the finest a workshop attempts, and it is what allows the vinework to stay crisp rather than dissolve at this scale. The pile itself is wool with silk brought in for detail, kept low at 6 mm so the drawing stays sharp underfoot rather than soft. A rug at this density from a named workshop such as Davari represents many months at the loom, and it shows in every curve of the scrollwork.
