About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

This is an Isfahan, the classic city-workshop rug of Persia, also written Esfahan, here at 200 x 129 cm (6'7" x 4'3"). Isfahan weavers are known for fine floral drawing and jewel-bright colour, worked from cartoons in a tradition perfected in the royal workshops of Shah Abbas. What sets this piece apart is restraint: where the type usually runs to a full chorus of saturated tone, here only one colour is allowed to speak.

What you see

The field is a pale apricot-beige, closer to camel than cream, and it stays quiet across the whole rug. Out of it rises a star-shaped medallion in deep brick red and ivory, its pendants reaching top and bottom, the one truly saturated colour in the piece. Radiating floral spandrels in mustard-gold and light blue soften its edges into the field. A wide, multi-band border, floral throughout, holds the same pale beige ground with navy and rust cartouches, framing the field firmly without ever competing with that medallion.

How it was made

Signed by the workshop of Davari, the rug is knotted on a silk warp, with a pile of wool and silk, at a density of 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so a silk warp lets the weaver tie more knots into the same space, and that fineness is exactly what gives the medallion's points and the border's small cartouches their sharp, drawn edge. At 6 mm the pile is kept short and even, so light sits on it as a fine matte sheen rather than a shadowed depth.

At home

At this size the rug belongs in a bedroom, a study, or a quiet seating corner rather than a large room. Its pale ground will lift a dim corner and hold its own against dark furniture, letting the red medallion carry the eye without ever overwhelming the room around it. Underfoot the dense knotting gives a firm, close pile that takes daily footsteps easily. As daylight crosses it through the day, the medallion keeps its glow while the rest of the field stays quietly, deliberately calm.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 200 × 129 cm (2.58 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.58 m² that is roughly 2.1 to 2.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
