Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Isfahan, a city rug from the workshops of Isfahan in central Iran, measuring 215 x 139 cm (7'1" x 4'7"). Isfahan weaving is generally the most disciplined of Persia's city traditions, prized for fine floral drawing set down from a master's cartoon and worked to a precision that recalls the geometry of the city's own mosques. Where jewel-bright fields are the usual signature of the type, this piece is drawn instead on deep navy, giving the design a quieter, more composed presence than an Isfahan normally carries.
What you see
The navy ground holds a lobed medallion with pendants above and below, and across the field pink and coral floral garlands drift outward toward cream cartouche corners, threaded through with sage, tan and gold. The colour reads dark and rich from across a room, but up close the pink garlands soften it considerably, so the piece never tips into the heaviness a navy field can suggest. A wide sage-green floral border, held between narrow ivory and navy guard stripes, closes the design and gives the eye a clear line back to the centre. In the lower left corner sits a woven signature cartouche, a workshop's mark left directly in the knots.
How it was made
The pile is wool worked over a silk warp, and the silk is what lets the drawing stay this fine: it spins thinner than cotton, so the weaver can knot more tightly and turn a curved petal or a garland tendril without the line breaking up. At a density of 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, that precision comes at real cost in time, and this piece carries the Mansouri workshop's name for it. A light sheen sits over the medallion and the floral details, wool and silk catching the light slightly differently across the same surface.
At home
At just over two metres by less than a metre and a half, this is a rug for a study, a bedroom, or a quiet corner of a living room rather than a room's full centre. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and warms considerably under lamplight, when the pink garlands come forward and the sage border settles back. Underfoot the pile is dense, smooth and only six millimetres deep, firm enough for a chair or a reading corner rather than heavy traffic. Left where the light crosses it through the day, the medallion catches the sheen differently by the hour, and it is a rug that rewards being looked at rather than simply walked past.
