About This Isfahan

Where it comes from

This is an Isfahan, also written Esfahan, a city-workshop rug from central Iran, measuring 222 x 144 cm (7'3" x 4'9"). Isfahan weavers have worked from drawn cartoons since the seventeenth century, prized for their fine floral drawing and mathematical clarity of line. Most pieces from this city favour warm jewel tones; this one is drawn instead in a cooler register of deep navy and sage green.

What you see

The eye meets a deep navy field first, dense with scrolling floral vines, before settling on a sage-green medallion at its centre, filled with bouquets of dusty pink and coral. Small birds sit among the vines, worked in fine detail rather than announced. Peach corner spandrels soften the field's edges, and a wide sage-green border, carrying pink and peach tendrils with paisley cartouches at the corners, closes the design against the dark ground.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted on a silk warp, with a pile of wool finished in silk. Silk spins finer than wool, so a silk warp permits a tighter knot, letting the floral drawing stay precise and the small birds hold their shape rather than blur into the vine. The pile is clipped low, smooth underfoot, with a light lustre rather than a strong sheen. Drawn and knotted to a fixed plan, the design keeps every motif cleanly within its outline.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner. Against a pale floor the navy field holds its own, while the sage-green medallion keeps the palette cool rather than heavy. The pile is fine and smooth underfoot, suited to a calm room rather than heavy traffic. As daylight moves across it, the small birds in the vines are what you keep noticing.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 222 × 144 cm (3.20 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
