Ilam rugs come from Ilam Province in western Iran, bordering Iraq, where a relatively young weaving tradition was established in the early 1980s. Designs draw inspiration from Isfahan and Sarouk-Arak traditions, knotted with the asymmetrical (Persian) knot. The finest pieces feature silk foundations, placing them among the most refined products of modern Persian weaving.
Though lacking centuries of indigenous tradition, Ilam weavers produce pieces with softer, lighter colouring than their "parent" styles and distinctive lengthwise symmetrical compositions. Wool and silk pile on silk foundations create a refined surface with natural lustre. This particular piece has been enhanced with luxurious silk accents, lending the rug a subtle luminescence and exceptional tactile quality. The master weaver has signed this piece, a mark of exceptional quality and pride in their craft.
More on Ilam rugs: origin, making and how to recognise a genuine piece
Measuring 197 × 137 cm, with an area of 2.70 m², crafted from Wool with Silk, Hand-knotted, this piece is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The knot density of 800,000 – 1,000 000 / m² speaks to the extraordinary care woven into every inch.
Preserved in perfect condition, a young weaving tradition that has quickly achieved remarkable quality, modern persian craftsmanship at its finest. As an exclusive piece from our collection, it represents a true collector's item.
Exceptionally fine weave
At 197 × 137 cm (2.70 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.
Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre; across 2.70 m² that is roughly 2.2 to 2.7 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.
This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
