About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

A Lori-Pars, also written Luri-Pars, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains in south-west Iran, 243 x 174 cm (7'11" x 5'8"). Lori rugs are known for bold, confident geometry knotted from memory rather than from any drawn plan. This particular piece follows that same tradition and then sets it aside, choosing to say almost nothing at all.

What you see

The field is a warm sand beige touched with honey, and it carries no motif whatsoever — no medallion, no repeating border pattern, nothing that draws the eye toward a centre. What holds the eye instead is the wool itself: fine vertical striations run through the ground like grain in timber, with darker flecks surfacing here and there as the colour shifts gently from row to row. A narrow, paler beige border runs around all four sides, close enough in tone to the field that it barely reads as a frame.

How it was made

That striation is not decoration but the wool speaking. Hand-spun rather than machine-spun, each length of yarn varies slightly in thickness and in how it takes the natural mountain dye, and those small variations surface as the gentle abrash running through an otherwise plain ground. Hand-knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, with the pile kept low at 11mm, the surface stays even and close, so the eye reads the colour movement itself rather than any texture from the knots below.

At home

This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet corner of a living room, somewhere meant for rest rather than for following a pattern. The sand and honey tones warm a pale floor without asserting themselves, and the low, matte pile is soft and even underfoot, better suited to a calm room than a busy thoroughfare. Watch it through the day and the striping shifts gently with the light, never quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 243 × 174 cm (4.23 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.23 m² that is roughly 0.8 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
