About This Koliayie

Where it comes from

This is a Koliai, also written Koliayie, a tribal rug knotted by Kurdish weavers from the Songhor district of western Iran, part of the wider Kermanshah weaving region. It measures 274 x 155 cm (9'0" x 5'1"). Koliai rugs are known for a bold central medallion, and here it becomes a chain of three, each with its own ground colour.

What you see

A chain of three hooked diamond medallions marches down a dense navy field, each filled with small hooked tribal devices. The chain is not a flat repeat: the centre medallion sits on a warm camel ground, flanked above and below by two in deep red, so the colour changes as the eye travels down. Cream and ivory outline each medallion, mustard-gold and rust recur in the smaller shapes, and a wide ivory-ground floral vine border, framed by narrower red and navy stripes, closes the field in pale contrast.

How it was made

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, the pile of hand-spun wool tied onto a cotton warp, at a density of around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. That density is fine enough to keep the camel ground of the centre medallion distinct from the red of its neighbours, rather than letting the colours bleed into the navy lattice around them. The wool itself was shorn from sheep grazed on mountain pasture, still carrying enough lanolin to give the surface its quiet matte sheen and make the rug notably hard-wearing.

At home

In a bedroom or a quiet sitting room, the navy field holds its own against dark furniture, while the camel and red medallions warm a paler floor. Underfoot the wool is dense and springy, giving real depth without turning fragile — built for daily use, not for standing back from. As light crosses the room, the ivory border catches it first, and the rhythm of red, camel, red keeps drawing the eye back.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 274 × 155 cm (4.25 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.25 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
