About This Koliayie

Where it comes from

This is a Koliai rug, also written Koliayie, a tribal weaving from the Kurdish villages around Songhor in western Iran, part of the wider Kurdistan and Kermanshah weaving region. Koliai work is knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan, prized for its dense, high pile and its bold, energetic colour. This piece measures 298 x 157 cm (9'9" x 5'2").

What you see

A deep brick red field draws the eye to the centre, where a navy medallion rises in concentric layers of teal, cream and salmon. Rather than the flatter medallion usually seen on this weaving, it reads almost like a rosette, its edges crisp against the red ground. Matching pink ornaments fill the navy spandrels at each corner, and a dense floral repeat covers the field around them. A wide navy border, taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries the same salmon, cream and olive forms, closed by narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

Every knot was tied by hand, from memory rather than a drawn plan, onto a cotton warp with handspun wool for the pile. The density runs to 201,000-250,000 knots per square metre - fine for a tribal weaving - and it is what let the weaver hold four colours in tight concentric rings rather than the broader shapes this type usually allows. Lanolin-rich mountain wool, clipped to about 12 mm, gives the pile its weight and its long life underfoot.

At home

This is a rug for a dining table or a living room seating group. The red field holds its own against dark wood and warms a paler floor, and the navy medallion keeps the eye anchored across the room. Underfoot the wool is dense and springy, made for daily use rather than careful protection. Catch it in changing light and the layered medallion shifts between teal and salmon.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 298 × 157 cm (4.68 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.68 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
