About This Kelim
Where it comes from
This is a kilim, also spelled kelim, a flatwoven rug from the tribal weaving regions of Iran, measuring 298 x 200 cm (9'9" x 6'7"). Kilims are woven rather than knotted, valued for bold geometric pattern and a surface equally handsome on both sides. This particular piece takes that tradition and quiets it down, trading the usual strong motif for a plain field of narrow stripes.
What you see
The ground is a warm camel with sandy undertones, running the full width with no framing border. Across it fall thin vertical stripes, spaced without any strict repeat: cream, a dark brown flecked almost black, and here and there a faint rust red. The unevenness in their spacing gives away the hand at the loom rather than a pattern drawn in advance. There is no medallion and no border to speak of — the stripes simply run through to the fringe at either end, as though the field continues beyond the rug itself.
How it was made
The pattern comes entirely from the weft, packed tight against a natural wool warp, which is why the surface reads as fine ribbing rather than pile. Wool spun by hand for both warp and weft gives the stripes their slightly irregular width, since no two lengths of handspun yarn are quite identical. At only 4mm thick, the weave stays light and easy to fold, and because a kilim carries no pile to flatten or shed, both faces stay equally clean and equally usable, in effect doubling the working life of the rug.
At home
At this size the rug suits a living room, laid under a seating group where a quieter floor is wanted, something the eye can rest on rather than read. The camel ground warms a pale wood floor and holds its own beside darker furniture without competing for attention. Flat and firm underfoot, it takes daily footsteps well, and either face can be turned up as the years pass. In low afternoon light the stripes soften into the ground, then sharpen again as the sun moves across the room.

How do I care for this rug?
Vacuum regularly, ideally along the weave and without a rotating brush. A flatweave can be turned over, which spreads the wear — flip it once or twice a year. Blot spills at once with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards, and never rub.
