About This Kelim
Where it comes from
A kilim from the tribal weaving regions of Iran, 301 x 193 cm (9'11" x 6'4"), woven rather than knotted. The type is known for a flat, supple hand and for patterns that are usually bold and geometric, read equally well from either side. This particular piece takes that same technique and does almost nothing with it, which is precisely what makes it worth a second look.
What you see
The ground is a warm camel brown, close to sand, running the full length of the rug without a repeating motif to organise it. Across this plain field run thin vertical stripes in petrol blue and mustard gold, placed unevenly, sometimes close together and sometimes far apart, and never quite the same colour twice in a row. There is no separate border; the field simply runs to the edge and into the fringe, so nothing frames the stripes or contains them. The surface is matte, with a visible woolly grain running in one direction, the kind of texture that comes from yarn spun by hand rather than machine.
How it was made
That texture is the reason the stripes sit unevenly. The wool for both warp and weft was hand-spun, so the yarn itself varies slightly in thickness along its length, and the weaver worked the accent colours in by eye rather than to a counted plan. There is no knot count to speak of, because a kilim is built entirely in the weave, flat and reversible, at a thickness of only 4 mm — both faces finished equally, which in practice means the rug can be turned over and used again once the first side has had its years. Nothing here was drawn out in advance; the irregularity in the stripes is simply the record of a hand working without a cartoon.
At home
A piece this size sits comfortably under a coffee table or along one side of a sofa group in a living room, and the camel ground does useful work in either direction: it warms a pale wood or stone floor, and it holds its own quietly against dark furniture rather than competing with it. Being flat and only 4 mm thick, it lies close to the floor with no ridge at the edges, and takes daily footsteps without complaint — this is a rug meant to be walked on, not fussed over. In low, moving light the petrol and gold threads catch differently depending on where you stand, so the plain camel field never looks quite the same twice.
