About This Kelim

Where it comes from

This is a kilim, a flatwoven rug rather than a knotted one, from Kordestan in the Kurdish west of Iran — a region known for bold geometric pattern and a weave light enough to use on either side. At 296 x 196 cm (9'9" x 6'5"), this is sized for a room rather than a doorway, and built to be lived with rather than hung.

What you see

The first impression is a deep navy field densely covered in tiny multicolour geometric motifs, out of which an elongated ivory lozenge medallion rises, glowing against the dark ground, its edges softened by small floral sprigs. Around it runs a wide rust-orange border filled with small polychrome diamonds and boteh figures, held in place by narrower stripes of cream, navy and dark red. At each corner the field breaks: four plain cream spandrels, left empty against all that pattern, give the eye somewhere to rest.

How it was made

A kilim is woven rather than knotted: the pattern is built directly into a cotton warp by the weft itself, with no pile laid over it. That is why the surface stays flat and matt, only 4 mm thick, and reads just as clearly from the back as the front, so either side can face the room. The wool was hand-spun, and its slight unevenness shows in the small motifs, giving them a handmade edge rather than a printed one.

At home

At 296 x 196 cm this suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, meant to be walked across daily rather than kept for best. The navy holds its own against dark furniture, while the rust border warms a room with pale flooring. Underfoot it is thin, smooth and flat, wearing evenly with use. In good light the small motifs catch and the ivory medallion comes forward.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 296 × 196 cm (5.80 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

No — this piece is hand-woven, not knotted. A flatweave has no pile: the pattern comes from warp and weft alone. That makes it thin, light and usable on both sides, and it is a technique in its own right rather than a simpler version of a knotted rug.

How do I care for this rug?

Vacuum regularly, ideally along the weave and without a rotating brush. A flatweave can be turned over, which spreads the wear — flip it once or twice a year. Blot spills at once with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards, and never rub.
